37th Annual Virginia-Highland Summerfest Canceled for 2021 Smaller Friday Night Fundraiser Still Planned
Tuesday, September 21st, 2021
Due to the current COVID-19 numbers in Atlanta, organizers of the Virginia-Highland Summerfest, which was scheduled to take place Sept. 25-26, 2021, have decided to cancel this year’s festival. Planning for the 2022 festival is already underway and is slated for early June 2022.
“After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Summerfest,” said Leah Matthews, festival co-chair. “With rising cases of COVID-19 in Georgia, including Fulton County, it would be irresponsible to hold a large festival at this time. Although Summerfest takes place outdoors, it draws significant crowds. Typically, that is a good thing, but not during the pandemic.”
Despite cancelling the weekend festival, the planning committee will hold the smaller, more socially distanced fundraiser A Night Out for John Howell Park on Friday, Sept. 24, as originally scheduled. This limited-capacity, ticketed event includes a catered dinner by D.B.A. Barbecue. All funds raised will go directly to support improvements for John Howell Park.
“We hope supporters will considering attending our smaller Friday night event, and we look forward to seeing everyone back in Virginia Highland next year,” said Leah Matthews.
