This hands-on workshop willteach participants the fundamentals of paper conservation that can be used to preserve and repair their paper-based objects. The course will cover what paper is and how it degrades, ethics and decision-making for conservation treatments, selecting appropriate conservation materials, humidification and flattening, dry surface cleaning, basic tape removal, preparing conservation-appropriate adhesives and remoistenable mending tissue, and tear repairs. A toolkit of the basic tools necessary to complete all the treatments will be included in the registration fee to allow participants to continue to execute the treatmentstaught after the workshop. ARCHIVAL MOUNTING FOR FLAT PAPER OBJECTS AND PHOTOGRAPHS
A good way to preserve flat paper objects or photographs on display is appropriate archival mounting, which can protect the object from future damage. This workshop will cover creating mounts using a variety of adhesive and non-adhesive archival methods, including hinging, inlay, edge strips and wraps, corners and more. Class discussions will include the best material choices for presentation and the best archival qualities for preservation. Participants are encouraged to bring their own photos or flat paper objects to mount. Instructor: Paper Conservator Sigourney Smuts,Georgia Archives August 26 - 28, 2022 - $300.00.
INTRODUCTION TO GILDING METHODS AND BASIC FRAME REPAIR
Not all that glitters is gold ... but a giltwood frame comes pretty close! While many tend to focus on the object that a frame holds, the frame is in fact the silent and unsung hero. It provides protection for the object and a properly paired frame will contribute to the overall visual harmony. This hands-on workshop will cover the history of frames and an introduction to frame conservation, instruction on traditional water gilding and mordant gilding techniques using both genuine gold leaf and metal leaf, as well as an introduction to basic frame repair, such as the filling of losses and casting of missing ornamentation and decorative elements. Participants will leave the course with a rudimentary understanding of gilding and frame repair, a basic toolkit, as well as a few golden, or"gilded"tokens from the weekend. Instructor: Paintings Conservator Laura Garner Hine, ReNewell, Inc. Fine Art Conservation November 4 - 6, 2022 - $300.00.
