Horizons Atlanta Announces New Board of Directors and Welcomes New Staff

Horizons Atlanta (HA), a nonprofit that supports metro-Atlanta K-12 students from underserved communities through its six-week summer and year-round learning programs, today announced that long-time Horizons board member and Atlanta International School Head of School Kevin Glass has been selected as its new Board of Directors Chair. Glass succeeds retired Coca-Cola European Partners CEO John Brock who will remain on the board as Past Chair. Other changes and additions include Christina Graham moving to the role of Board Secretary and Ed Roberts joining Horizons’ Board.
Additionally, Horizons Atlanta welcomes LaVasia Bullard as Regional Program Manager and Laura McHargue as Assistant Director of Development to its staff.
“We are thankful for John’s leadership as Board Chair for the last nine years and especially during the pandemic as we navigated the challenges of assisting our scholars and their families in new and meaningful ways,” said Horizon Atlanta’s Executive Director Alex Wan. “We welcome Kevin and Christina to the Board’s Executive Committee and look forward to working more with Ed, LaVasia, and Laura as we continue to move forward in helping our students recover from the pandemic and mitigate further learning loss.”
Board of Directors Changes:
Kevin Glass, a member of Horizons Atlanta’s Board of Directors since 2018, is currently the Head of School for Atlanta International School in Buckhead. His career in education includes leadership and teaching positions in South and West Africa, Central and North America, and Central Asia. In addition to Horizons Atlanta, Glass serves on various other boards, including the Association for the Advancement of International Education (AAIE), the Academy for International School Heads (AISH), the Center for the Advancement and Study of International Education (CASIE), the Atlanta Area Association in Independent Schools (AAAIS) and the Buckhead Coalition.
Christina Graham, Horizons Atlanta’s new Board Secretary, is a Partner with Morris, Manning & Martin. She is well-known for her expertise in commercial real estate acquisitions and dispositions, development, financing, tax-free exchanges and assisting with the firm’s infrastructure team on public/private partnership matters. Graham has served on Horizons Atlanta’s board for three years and is a member of the Emory School of Law Alumni Board, the Urban Land Institute, the Women’s Leadership Initiative of ULI, and the Emory Real Estate Network Advisory Council.
Ed Roberts is the Brand and Creative Director at Georgia Power where he is responsible for the omnichannel development and implementation of the organization’s brand and creative strategy, sports marketing sponsorships, and community activations. He is a writer and speaker with more than 25 years of advertising agency and client-side marketing experience as well as the co-founder of WWDYCT (What We Do You Can, Too). WWDYCT’s mission is to connect high school students from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds with professionals who work within the advertising and public relations industries, providing them with real-life work experiences through a summer internship and college scholarship program.
Horizons Atlanta’s Staff Additions:
LaVasia Bullard has been part of the Horizons Atlanta family since 2016, serving as a Site Director for Horizons’ Purpose Built Schools Atlanta (PBSA) program. During this time, Bullard also served as K- 2 Instructional Coach at Thomasville Heights Elementary School. In her new role as the Regional Program Manager, she will be utilizing her vast educational experience as an elementary and middle school teacher with Atlanta Public Schools and Teach for America as well as her expertise in Literacy and Social Emotional Learning to create and deliver new professional development training and programming to staff at all of Horizons Atlanta’s program sites. Bullard earned her bachelor’s degree in Policy Studies at Syracuse University and her master’s degree in Educational Leadership at Georgia State University.
Laura McHargue is Horizons’ new Assistant Director of Development. Prior to Horizons Atlanta, McHargue was the Development Associate for Breakthrough Atlanta hosted at The Lovett School where she exceeded her fundraising goal every year. She is an accomplished writer and communicator, having worked with Focus Media Group and in client services for ResourceOne/Moore DM Group and the One & All Agency. McHargue is a graduate of the Goizueta Business School at Emory University with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. She is the Past Chair of the Emory Alumnae & Women Network.
