The critically acclaimed theatrical production
Chimpanzee, created by award-winning Brooklyn-based theater and puppet artist Nick Lehane, premieres Friday, April 8 at the Center for Puppetry Arts. This production has triggered a unique partnership between the Center and
Project Chimps, a nonprofit North Georgia chimpanzee sanctuary.
New York Magazine calls Chimpanzee a “gorgeous puppet play…a meticulous, deeply felt nonverbal memory play.” It is an hour in a theater, a day in a biomedical facility, and a lifetime in the mind of a chimpanzee.
“This extraordinary piece of adult puppetry sold out New York performances and is a must-see for all theater lovers,” says Center Executive Director Beth Schiavo. “We’re grateful to our partners at Project Chimp for sharing information with our audiences about the important work they do.”
Chimpanzee is a fictional memory play based on the true story of chimpanzees that were raised like children in human homes in a cross-fostering experiment conducted in the United States. When these chimps matured, or when funding ended, some of these cross-fostered chimps went on to live as test subjects in various areas of scientific research.
Until 2015, Chimpanzees were commonly used in experiments by research institutes all across the country. Hundreds of chimpanzees remain warehoused in labs to this day. Chimp sanctuaries like Project Chimps, located in Blue Ridge, Ga., are helping former research chimps by providing them lifelong care. Representatives from Project Chimps will appear before and after performances at the Center to answer questions about their work.
Your ticket includes admission to the Worlds of Puppetry Museum, which will open a half hour before the performance. Recommended for ages 14 & up.
