Gwinnett Hotel License Plate Readers Solve Catalytic Converter Theft Cases
Thursday, June 16th, 2022
Earlier this year, Explore Gwinnett, the tourism marketing arm of the Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau, launched a first-of-its-kind safety initiative to place more than 100 Flock Safety cameras in the county’s hotels and major venues. Recently, these cameras were used to solve a large catalytic converter theft case in Gwinnett County.
On the morning of April 22nd, the Gwinnett County Police - Central Precinct had 5 catalytic converters stolen from vehicles parked at a hotel within the Sugarloaf CID. The precinct investigator used the newly-installed Explore Gwinnett Flock Safety cameras to locate a possible suspect vehicle, a rental with Texas tags, which had been at all the targeted hotels during the time of the incidents.
While the investigation was ongoing, the area was targeted again on May 1st with another 8 similar catalytic converter thefts. Gwinnett County Police were able to locate another suspect vehicle, once again a rental vehicle with Texas tags, on the Explore Gwinnett Flock Safety cameras.
A third incident took place on May 14th, when the same area saw 9 catalytic converter thefts stolen from vehicles in hotels. The same Gwinnett County lieutenant identified another possible suspect vehicle with a Texas tag, which was added to the Flock Safety alert system. Later that afternoon, the vehicle was detected by a Flock camera in the Norcross area. Officers were able to locate the vehicle driver and a passenger in a Norcross hotel and observed multiple catalytic converters in the vehicle. The two suspects were arrested and charged with over 30 warrants related to the thefts.
