Wednesday, June 15th, 2022

As teens across Georgia begin summer break and spend time out of the classroom, it’s more important than ever to empower parents with the tools and resources to support and manage their teens’ online experiences.

To help, TODAY Meta is 1) rolling out parental supervision tools in VR, 2) adding new features to supervision tools on Instagram, 3) developing “nudges” on concerning behavior, and 4) increasing resources found in the Family Center Education Hub

Visuals on the new resources can be found here

The new tools cover:

  • How parents can use supervision tools to support their teen’s Instagram and VR experience; including knowing when their teen reports an account
  • How parents can also set specific times to limit their teen’s use of Instagram. This builds on Meta’s already implemented tool, Take a Break, a feature that allows users to set time limits
  • What is behind the new “nudges” on Instagram that teens will soon see in their feed to encourage teens towards positive content
  • Where to find new resources available for parents including more expert-backed articles on the Family Center’s Education Hub

With an estimated 95% of teenagers having access to a smartphone, it is vital for parents to have resources and tools for an open and honest conversation with their teens about positive and negative experiences they may face online. After hearing input from teens, parents, experts and policymakers on what is most helpful, Meta is rolling out these changes  - on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, or Oculus - to help foster a better experience for all.
