September brings so much change — a new school year, cooler temperatures, falling leaves — but Aurora Theatre bringing the best performances and cultural events to Lawrenceville never changes! This month, Aurora Comedy Nights returns with three hilarious weekends featuring comedians Dan Mengini and Henry Cho and improv troupe Improv Athens. On the Cabaret stage, The Boys Are Back presents a tribute to boybands from the Beatles to Backstreet Boys to BTS. The Children’s Playhouse engages families in nerdy, scientific wonder with its shows Air Up There and Fairy God Doctor. Meanwhile, interactive productions of Como Vivir en Pareja y no Morir en el Intento (How to Live as a Couple and Not Die Trying) andThe Trail to Oregon! let the audience share in hilarious tales of love and life. For those seeking new cultural experiences, Teatro Aurora will shine a light on local Latiné arts and vendors in the free event Nuestras Voces: A Hispanic Heritage Open-Mic and Mercado. Mary Poppins also continues this month, along with a special Jolly Holiday Party for young chimney sweeps and magical nannies-in-training.

An actor and stand-up comedian who was born in Bermuda and raised in the U.S., Dan Mengini now brings his truthful and brilliant commentary on life to the Lawrenceville Arts Center. Audiences will recognize him from his television appearances on programs such as Showtime’s Homeland, USA Network’s Necessary Roughness, Lifetime TV’s Drop Dead Diva, The CW’s One Tree Hill, and a starring role on Adult Swim’s live action shows The Restless Bell and The Rising Son. In addition to lots of laughs, patrons can also partake in a cash bar – without the standard two drink minimum!

Improv Athens is the University of Georgia’s longest running improv comedy troupe, placing third at the national 2020 College Improv Tournament. Guests who enjoy Dad’s Garage Theatre and Blacktop Improv will love the hilarious scenes and stories that these funny dawgs create from audience suggestions.

Aurora Theatre welcomes back nationally renowned comedian, television and film star Henry Cho. After appearances on shows like NBC’s The Tonight Show, CBS’s The Late, Late, Show, and NBC’s Young Comedians Special, this comedy superstar returns to the Lawrenceville Arts Center for some good, clean fun.

Big Thinkers Science Exploration will dazzle and inform audiences through their newest interactive journey all about air! These entertaining scientists engage kids as they explore the properties of air and pressure with wacky experiments that include floating beach balls and floating children (courtesy of the Big Thinkers hovercraft).

This Aurora Children’s Playhouse premiere will be fun for nerds of all ages! Hilarity ensues when the Disney Corporation takes over the beloved Doctor Who franchise, pairing the Time Lord with his most annoying companion ever – a Disney princess. Felt Nerdy is powered by the dynamic duo of Atlanta-based puppeteers Veronica Dashiell and Charles Kelso who dare to cross nerd culture, felt and fur to the delight of their audiences.

Young chimney sweeps and magical nannies-in-training are invited to join Mary Poppins (played by Galen Crawley) and her friends from London for a post-show tea party. Event includes refreshments and a photo opportunity with Mary Poppins. Open to children 12 and under, an accompanying adult is included in child’s ticket purchase.

From Independent Artists’ Playhouse & Innovative Theatrics LLC, the creative genius behind recent Aurora favorites Men of Motown and Ladies of the 80s, the hottest boy bands from the ‘60s through today are making a comeback. This cabaret tribute to boy bands will feature the iconic smooth vocals and explosive dance moves audiences expect as local artists perform the biggest hits from The Beatles, The Jackson 5, Boyz II Men, *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, BTS and One Direction.

You read that right— this race is a zero-point-5k (a little less than half of a mile). A quick jaunt down the block will get racers to the finish line at Slow Pour Brewing Company where brunch bites and beer (or root beer) will be waiting! Participants will receive a shirt to commemorate their accomplishment. Proceeds from the event benefit Aurora Theatre.

At Aurora Theatre Academy, theater students ages 3 – 103 have the opportunity to rehearse and perform in a professional theatre setting under the direction of working professionals. The fall line-up features a variety of classes to suit every interest and skill level, including theatre 101 for adults, improv workshops, audition bootcamps and children’s classes focusing on topics such as fairytales and classic Broadway shows.

Originally produced by Starkid Productions, The Trail to Oregon! is a comedy musical based on the educational computer game The Oregon Trail. The musical follows a run-of-the-mill, down-on-their-luck family as they venture out into the frontier. Watch as they encounter the misfortunes of a grueling trail: unrelenting bandits, harsh terrain, a particularly stinky illness and the inevitable death of their loved ones (not to mention, their general lack of intellect)! Come prepared because the audience decides the fate of this poor family! Name them, kill them, ridicule them— it’s up to you!
