Atlanta Board of Education (ABOE) member Jason Esteves (At-Large Seat 9) has announced that he is resigning from the Board after winning an election to the Georgia State Senate on Tuesday evening.

Mr. Esteves submitted yesterday evening his letter of intent to resign from the Board effective December 31, 2022. He will actively participate in board duties until that date, and his final monthly board meeting will be on December 5, 2022.

During his nine years of service to Atlanta Public Schools, after being elected to the Board on December 4, 2013, Mr. Esteves focused his efforts on promoting equity and improving the financial outlook of the school system. He held several leadership roles including serving as Board Chair (2018-2021) and led board governance through the height of the pandemic.
As an attorney and former educator, he dedicated his time on the Board to working to ensure every child in Atlanta Public Schools obtains an education that prepares them for college, career, and life. His dedication to APS’s mission, reputation, financial health, and forward-thinking stand on equity is the hallmark of his legacy of service to Atlanta’s students and families.

“Jason has been a great asset to the APS Board for close to a decade and now a new call to service beckons,” APS Superintendent Dr. Lisa Herring said. “Congratulations on your State Senate win! Thank you for answering the noble call to public service and we wish you every success as you transition to a new mission in service to our state. You remain near and dear to our APS family.”

Filling the vacant Board seat

The ABOE will appoint an individual to serve the remainder of the unexpired term for At-Large Seat 9. Individuals interested in applying for At-Large Seat 9 must meet the following minimum qualifications:

Must be at least 18 years of age
Must be a resident of APS Education District 5 or 6
Must be a qualified elector of the City of Atlanta
May not be an employee of the State Department of Education or a member of the State Board of Education
Further, to be appointed, the successful candidate must meet the above qualifications and:

May not hold any other elective public office
May not be an employee of the Atlanta Board of Education or any other local board of education
May not serve on the governing body of any private K-12 educational institution
All interested candidates must attend at least one mandatory in-person orientation session, scheduled for Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at 5:00 p.m., and on Monday, November 28, 2022 at 5:00 p.m. These sessions will be held at the Alonzo A. Crim Center for Leadership and Learning (CLL), located at 130 Trinity Avenue, SW.

In order to attend the November 16, 2022 session, you must register no later than 5:00 p.m. on November 14, 2022.
In order to attend the November 28, 2022 session, you must register no later than 5:00 p.m. on November 22, 2022.
Potential candidates will receive an email confirming their registration. Any individual who fails to attend their registered session in person will not be considered. Along with attending an orientation session, Interested candidates should submit an application consisting of:

All completed applications must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 30, 2022. It is each candidate’s responsibility to ensure that materials are complete and are received by APS in a timely fashion. Any application not received by the deadline, as well as incomplete applications, will not be considered. Candidates are encouraged to submit their completed application materials as soon as possible, and they will receive an email confirming receipt of a timely and complete application.
