TSCID to Benefit from Federal TIP Funds
Wednesday, January 4th, 2023
Earlier this month, the Atlanta Regional Commission Board approved an update to the region’s Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) that will allocate $235 million in federal funds for 77 transportation projects across metro Atlanta, including updates to Mountain Industrial Boulevard – the main corridor within the Tucker Summit Community Improvement District.
Upgrades along Mountain Industrial Boulevard in DeKalb County will include the reconfiguration of left turn lanes, the addition of sidewalks to improve accessibility and improved mobility for freight truck traffic.
The City of Tucker obtained the federal allocation of $350,000 for the district and the City and the CID contributed another $90,000 for a total of $450,000. The projects selected came from the Freight Cluster Plan. Project details include design plans for improvements such as increasing intersection radii to accommodate truck movements, signage, new traffic signals and mast arms at the following intersections along Mountain Industrial Boulevard:
North Royal Atlanta Drive
South Royal Atlanta Drive
Greer Circle
The entire list includes 35 roadway improvements, 25 bicycle-pedestrian trails, eight transit projects, and nine planning studies. The projects require a local match of at least 20% and were selected through a collaborative solicitation process designed to meet the priorities of local communities and improve mobility in the Atlanta region.
“The Atlanta Regional Commission is an incredible organization that helps to foster a better and more accessible region to further attract businesses and economic growth,” said Emory Morsberger, president of Tucker Summit CID.
According to John Orr, ARC’s managing director of Transportation Planning, “These projects will help local communities across metro Atlanta provide better, safer transportation options for their residents that improve quality of life and spark sustainable economic growth.”
Local governments and transportation agencies submitted applications for funding in October 2021. ARC evaluated and prioritized projects based on a combination of performance and cost-effectiveness measures.
The Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) allocates federal funds for the construction of the highest-priority projects in the Regional Transportation Plan, the long-term transportation vision for the 20-county region. The TIP is typically amended one to two times each year.
