Sustainable chicken feed and treat company Grubbly Farms reported a 50% increase in new customers last month – a spike they say demonstrates a rise in backyard chicken ownership and the desire to boost at-home egg production. The store-bought egg shortages and high prices – CNBC reports a 60% increase in 2022, the largest of any U.S. good or service – follow the largest outbreak of avian flu in U.S. history killing millions of commercial egg-laying hens.
“We’re seeing more and more customers turning to backyard chickens and switching to our feeds to boost the production of their homegrown eggs,” said Patrick Pittaluga, CRO and co-founder of Grubbly Farms. “As a flock owner myself, I’ve experienced firsthand the benefits of feeding natural, high-protein ingredients like grubs to my chickens. We are eager to educate the public on the ins and outs of backyard chicken ownership, especially when it comes to the importance of their diet and healthy egg production, given the historic cost of eggs.”
Grubbly Farms’ chicken feeds and treats are made with plants, vitamins, minerals, probiotics and black soldier fly grubs, an alternative all-natural insect protein that is healthy for pets and easy on the earth. Grubs are very high in micronutrients like methionine, an amino acid essential for chickens' health. Grubs and fish are the main two natural sources, so large-scale feed manufacturers often have to use synthetic methionine. Grubbly Farms’ feeds are the perfect recipe for egg layers and has shown to boost egg production for happy, healthy chickens. A recent review from a new customer and long-time chicken owner said, “For 9 months, my chickens were not laying eggs. I tried everything. I ordered some of your feed after a friend recommended it and after two weeks, we finally have eggs!”
Unlike commercial feeds that use soy, corn, byproducts and fillers, Grubbly Farms uses grubs, veggies, whole grains and more to provide a complete, sustainable and healthy feed. Grubs are packed with nutrients and sustainably grown with 90% fewer resources than conventional protein like beef. Chickens, ducks and other birds instinctually love foraging the Earth for grubs. A grub-based diet promotes better health for flocks while supporting feather health and egg production for heavy egg layers, including stronger eggshells, rich, creamy yolks and unbeatable flavor.
