Gwinnett County Board of Commisioners Roundup
Monday, August 21st, 2023
The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners acted on several new initiatives during their meeting on Tuesday. Here is a recap of what they approved.
More eyes on the streets for Gwinnett Police
Gwinnett Police will receive 30 new cameras thanks to the Gwinnett Place Community Improvement District. The Axis security cameras are valued at $2,550 each and will be placed at every traffic signal within the 14-square mile district which includes the I-85 corridor and a portion of I-285. The cameras will also support Gwinnett Transportation by providing better video coverage of traffic in the area while helping provide an extra layer of security for Gateway 85 business parking lots and fronts. The cameras will be vital to help develop, identify and locate offenders who commit various crimes against Gwinnett County residents and visitors. The Axis cameras are different from flock cameras. Flock cameras are license plate readers.
The CASA program in the County received a big boost
Gwinnett’s Court Appointed Special Advocates Program will soon have more volunteers to advocate for children in the foster care system.
The Georgia Court Appointed Special Advocate program granted the County $167,400 to recruit, train and supervise CASA volunteers.
RIDE Gwinnett launches new Breeze System App
Ride Gwinnett passengers can look forward to a more accessible, and interconnected ride across the county and surrounding areas. The County will continue participating in the Breeze system, including launching the Breeze Mobile app for riders.
Breeze allows Gwinnett riders to transfer buses across Gwinnett County and connect to the MARTA Indian Creek station and the new Route 70 beginning Aug.28; as well as the existing connections with Ride Gwinnett’s local routes and MARTA Doraville station.
Produce boxes for those in need
County residents will continue to have access to the food services they need thanks to American Rescue Plan Act funds. Through the food security initiative which kicked off in 2020, more than 125,000 produce boxes have been distributed and 440,000 residents helped.
The year-long contract renews Sept. 2.
