July Unemployment Rate Declines in Metro Atlanta

Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson said Thursday that Atlanta recorded an unemployment rate of 3.2 percent in July, down two-tenths from a revised 3.4 percent in June. A year ago, the rate was 3.0 percent.
 
Georgia’s labor market continues to stand strong as a beacon of hope and prosperity,” said Commissioner Bruce Thompson. “With low unemployment and plentiful job opportunities, local communities are thriving and showcasing remarkable resilience in the face of economic uncertainty.”
 
The labor force increased in Atlanta by 6,057 and ended the month with 3,244,242. This number increased by 53,527 when compared to July 2022.

 The number of employed increased by 13,876 to 3,140,912 in July. From July 2022 to July 2023, the number of employed was up by 45,473.

 The number of unemployed was down by 7,819 to 103,330 in July. From July 2022 to July 2023, the number of unemployed was up by 8,054.

 Atlanta ended July with 3,049,500 jobs. Jobs were down by 14,100 (-0.5%) over-the-month and up by 52,300 (1.7%) over the year. Jobs were at an all-time high in Leisure and Hospitality, 322,000, and Financial Activities, 208,100.

 The sectors with the most over-the-month job gains included Accommodation and Food Services, 1,700; Real Estate, Rental, and Leasing, 1,100; Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services, 700; Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation, 600; and Finance and Insurance, 500.

 The number of initial unemployment claims went up by 3,808 (27%) over-the-month to 17,852 in July.  Initial claims were up by 3,707 (26%) over-the-year.
