Broadway is back and flourishing in Atlanta, and with it comes a boost to the local economy. Back for its sixth engagement at the Fox Theatre, Regions Bank Broadway in Atlanta’s presentation of WICKED once again attracted droves of excited theatregoers to Peachtree Street. The four-week engagement from July 5 to July 30, 2023, was a resounding closing to the 2022/2023 Broadway in Atlanta season. In total, the musical welcomed more than 116,000 patrons and generated a local economic impact of over $30 million.
“The staying power of WICKED is so remarkable. Atlanta audiences, like a lot of audiences around the country, have the most incredible response to it every time,” said Russ Belin, Vice President of Broadway in Atlanta. “It’s an honor to bring such high caliber shows to the South, and we’re equally proud that we’re able to impact our city in such a tremendous way as a result.”
Broadway in Atlanta’s 2023/2024 season is set to bring hundreds of thousands more patrons to Midtown when it kicks off in October with the Atlanta premiere of MJ. Other shows slated for the season include the first national tour of the recent cult-favorite BEETLEJUICE as well as SIX, ALADDIN and the return of HAMILTON.
The economic impact of the four-week engagement of WICKED is based on analysis by The Broadway League, the national trade association for the Broadway industry. This impact is generated by tourism dollars spent at hotels, local restaurants, parking and more. Additionally, a large stage production such as WICKED employs nearly 100 local stagehands, local musicians, hair and wardrobe professionals and merchandise sellers
