Cindy Sherman, Roy Lichtenstein and Howard Finster are just a few of the prominent artists whose work is on display at The Warehouse, a new contemporary art space in Atlanta’s Westside. Opening to the public for the first time April 13, The Warehouse exhibits the private collection of legendary Atlanta home builder John Wieland and his late wife Sue. The collection is unique in that all works relate to the overarching themes of house and home.

The Wielands started collecting art in the 1980s. John, founder and former chairman of John Wieland Homes and Neighborhoods, was searching for pieces for his first headquarters in College Park. As his home building business grew to include more than 30,000 homes built across the southeast, so did the art collection.

Today The Warehouse features over 400 works by 250 national and international artists and encompasses nearly all media, including painting, photography, works on paper, sculpture, installation art, ceramics, textile art, and video/film. Notable works include Vito Acconci’s Bad Dream House II, Robert Gober’s Half Stone House, Do Ho Suh’s Main Entrance, 388 Benefit Street, Providence, RI 02903, USA, and Thomas Demand’s Backyard.

“The Warehouse is an approachable and unusual way to experience art as all works are centered around the theme of house and home,” said John Wieland. “We are pleased to open our doors to the public and invite the community to experience the joy, familiarity and curiosity found within the collection.”

To showcase the collection, the Wielands purchased a former furniture warehouse in 2010 and converted the 37,000-square-foot space to include galleries, storage and administrative offices. In 2023, The Warehouse underwent extensive renovations to receive visitors, including the addition of a 2,000-square-foot mezzanine and a video theater.

Philip Verre, formerly chief operating officer at the High Museum of Art, is The Warehouse’s director. Jack Wieland is the curator for The Warehouse’s reinstallation. Sara Tanner serves as collection manager.

Guests may visit The Warehouse on the second Saturday of each month from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. by reservation only. Admission is free. To learn more and plan a visit, please visit thewarehouse.org.
