Monday, June 10th, 2024
Delta Community Credit Union, in partnership with V-103, is pleased to announce the first three recipients of its 2024 HBCU Scholarship Award, which provides financial assistance to students attending or planning to attend Historically Black Colleges and Universities. After reviewing more than 700 applications, the most since the program began in 2015, the following students were selected to receive $5,000 each:
- Jordan Caldwell is a senior at Clark Atlanta University majoring in art. A 2020 graduate from Pebblebrook High School in Mableton, Caldwell plans to become an illustrator and the first female Black animated film director. Caldwell has a 3.8 GPA and is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society. She also helps coordinate mentoring events for local high school students through Collegiate 100, a campus-based student organization.
- Sydney Catron is an incoming freshman at Spelman College, where she plans to major in biology/pre-med with a minor in Spanish. A 2024 graduate from Mount Paran Christian School in Kennesaw, she aspires to become an obstetrician/gynecologist and bring healthcare to overlooked and underrepresented communities. Catron has maintained a 4.1 GPA and completed an internship with Kennesaw Gynecology.
- Amir Rowser graduated from South Atlanta High School in Atlanta this spring. He will begin his first year of college at Fort Valley State University in the fall, but is entering as a junior due to credits earned from dual enrollment. He is an advocate for financial literacy and also serves as co-chair of the Dukes Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to youth mentoring. Rowser has recorded more than 200 hours of community service and has a 4.0 GPA.
The Delta Community and V-103 2024 HBCU Scholarship Program will award a total of five $5,000 scholarship awards in 2024, one more than last year. The final two recipients will be announced in November, following another application period.
“It is an honor to support students who are dedicated to their personal education and the well-being of their local communities,” said Hank Halter, Delta Community’s CEO. “Our scholarship programs are part of Delta Community’s commitment to good corporate citizenship, and we are pleased to increase the number of awards that we are extending this year given so many deserving applicants.”
“We are extremely proud of each student and their accomplishments,” said V-103 radio host Big Tigger. “We are thrilled to see the program thriving, because we love supporting intelligent, community-minded individuals like Jordan, Sydney and Amir, and we are confident they will continue to make a positive difference through their volunteerism and professional pursuits.”
Students can apply for the next scholarship period beginning August 1.
