Daytime Lane Closures Announced for I-85 Widening, Phase III Project

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Tuesday, September 17th, 2024

Weather permitting, Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) contractors will implement daytime lane closures on I-85 northbound and southbound for final asphalt paving work for the project’s completion. Beginning Monday, September 16, for approximately four weeks, single lane closures will be permitted on I-85 between State Route (SR) 11/US 129 and US 441, mile marker 137 and MM 149.

Crews may implement lane closures on the following schedule, excluding weather and special events:

I-85 northbound between MM 137 and MM 149

  • Mondays through Fridays, 7 a.m. until 4 p.m.

I-85 southbound between MM 143 and MM 137

  • Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Additional center- and right- or left-lane closures may occur at night to allow for paving of the middle lane in either direction.

Construction originally began on this segment of I-85 in 2022 and the project is widening I-85 northbound and southbound from two to three lanes from US 129 to US 441 in addition to replacing and widening four mainline bridges in two locations.

Throughout August, the project team made progress bringing segments of the project online as they have been completed with the overall completion this fall.

With crews paving adjacent to live lanes of traffic, Georgia DOT encourages motorists to slow down through the work zone and follow the posted speed limits.
