The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) unveiled a mosaic art installation by local artist Michael Jones at Airport Station on Tuesday, September 24, highlighting the ongoing rehabilitation efforts to modernize this vital transit hub.
The captivating mosaic, inspired by the Atlanta skyline, features vivid colors and intricate patterns that reflect the city’s energy, cultural growth, and architectural beauty. This large-scale artwork enriches the visual experience for millions of travelers passing through the world’s busiest airport annually, enhancing the aesthetic of the newly renovated station.
“MARTA is committed to revitalizing our transit stations, and public art is a key component of that effort,” said MARTA General Manager and CEO Collie Greenwood. “This mosaic symbolizes the progress and vibrancy of Atlanta, a city known for its rich history, resilience, and as 'a city too busy to hate.' It’s not just a piece of art but a celebration of the community and the ongoing growth of our city.”
The artwork installation marks a significant milestone in MARTA's efforts to revitalize stations across the system, following other art installations as part of MARTA’s Artbound program, which promotes cultural expression and community engagement through public art at transit stations.
The new artwork is part of the broader rehabilitation efforts at Airport Station, which is included in the $55 million station renovation project funded by MARTA’s State of Good Repair program. This project features new terrazzo flooring, upgraded platform pavers, enhanced lighting, and various infrastructure improvements designed to modernize this essential transit hub.
Additionally, MARTA plans to build a new RideStore, install elevators, signage, lighting, and wall cladding, and create a new canopy that complements the existing Airport canopy. All these improvements are designed with one goal in mind: to make Airport Station run more efficiently and be more welcoming, while reflecting the dynamic spirit of Atlanta.
