The Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell metro records the 12th highest share of remote workers in the United States, the area managing to triple its ratio of teleworkers over the past 10 years. The Atlanta metro, however, failed to remain among the top five remote-friendly metros, where it stood before the pandemic.

Methodology: the analysis was conducted by CoworkingMag*, the sister website of CoworkingCafe and part of the Yardi network. To compile the report, we leveraged Census Bureau data on the evolution of work-from-home in 109 U.S. metropolitan areas, each with a population of over 500,000. As a result, we determined the metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) with the most significant changes in the last 10 years and the ones that currently host the highest shares of remote workers, as well as those that are still seeing increases in the number of teleworkers even post-pandemic.

Here are the highlights for the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell Metro Area:

  • With 19.1% of its almost 3,200,000 workers having hybrid or fully remote jobs, Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell was the U.S. metro with the 12th highest share of remote workers in 2023;
  • The Atlanta metro had the 4th largest share of remote workers before the pandemic, with 8.8% of its workforce working from home partly or fully in 2019;
  • Compared to the metro’s pre-pandemic share of teleworkers, the metro’s remote workforce more than doubled as of 2023 (117%);
  • Also, the metro area tripled (208%) its pool of remote and hybrid workers in the last decade (2014-2023), recording a notable surge among the analyzed U.S metros;
  • In terms of the share of remote workers, the Atlanta metro peaked in 2021 when 24.2% of its workforce was fully or partly remote, this percentage dropping to 19.1% after the following two years.

Nationally, the total number of remote workers stood at over 22 million in 2023, having tripled throughout the last decade. Across the U.S., eight large metros employ over 20% of their working population remotely and only 13 stand below the 10% threshold. However, professionals have the highest chances of securing a remote position in Austin, TX, which is followed up in our ranking by Raleigh, NC, and Denver, CO.
