Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) is delighted to welcome back the university’s Buzz Bus art supply donation events for the 2024-25 academic year by gifting thousands of art supplies to schools in SCAD’s hometowns of Atlanta and Savannah.

Inaugurated by SCAD president and founder Paula Wallace in 2010, the SCAD SERVE Buzz Bus has made high-quality arts education possible for thousands of students across the region. Buzz Bus is a part of the SCAD SERVE initiative which empowers SCAD students, faculty, and staff to make intentional, meaningful contributions that improve quality of life for local communities.

“This is all about spreading joy and creativity!” said SCAD SERVE vice president Scott Linzey. “SCAD has a long legacy of giving to our community and it’s wonderful to see our students interacting with these younger students to show them they too can turn their artful talents into creative careers.”

The SCAD SERVE Buzz Bus donations in Atlanta kicked off this month at Conley Hills Elementary School, with additional events slated at College Park Elementary in November. In Savannah, the SCAD SERVE Buzz Bus made stops at Virginia Heard Elementary School, with another slated for Juliette Low Elementary School this fall. SCAD SERVE Buzz Bus plans to have quarterly donation events in both Atlanta and Savannah, visiting new schools across the regions.

SCAD SERVE staff and student volunteers work directly with the schools to identify a wish list of creative supplies and artistic tools that will benefit the young students - everything from paints and pencils to canvas and clay. 

When SCAD delivers the boxes of materials, they also bring an afternoon of celebration and inspiration.  SCAD SERVE students work one on one with the students in an art class creating a work of art and the university's elite performance ensemble, the Bee Sharps, put on a show with SCAD’s mascot Art the Bee - encouraging students to dance and sing along.

SCAD SERVE volunteer Lucy Laybourn is studying sequential art and production design. “I am so grateful to the inspirational art teachers I've had in my life and me and my fellow SCAD SERVE student volunteers who want to make sure that all kids have access to the arts and get the chance to express themselves creatively.”
