Ever wonder what’s fueling your favorite apps (and the AI boom)? It’s data centers—massive digital warehouses running 24/7 and using power at record levels — enough to power millions and millions of homes.

A new data analysis from cloud security experts at Upwind uncovers which U.S. data centers are fastest-growing, and compares their power consumption with average household energy consumption.

Atlanta ranks as the #4 fastest-growing data center region in the U.S., with capacity projected to grow by 484% — on track to have power capacity that is the equivalent of that needed to power nearly 2.6 million homes. That's more than in the entire Atlanta metropolitan region (2.3M households).

Here are the Top 5 Fastest-Growing Data Center Regions:

  1. Las Vegas/Reno: +953%, powering 3.1M homes—more than all of Denmark

  2. Salt Lake City: +700%

  3. Phoenix: +554%

  4. Atlanta: +484%

  5. Dallas-Fort Worth: +355%

That projected growth would make Atlanta the nations #5 top data center region by largest power capacity load. Northern Virginia remains in the #1 spot despite a lower growth rate (with projected power matching nearly 9.1 million homes—almost as many as all of Australia).

  1. Northern Virginia: 11,077 MW

  2. Phoenix: 5,340 MW

  3. Dallas-Fort Worth: 4,396 MW

  4. Las Vegas/Reno: 3,812 MW

  5. Atlanta: 3,125 MW
