Living in a smart city is crucial since it enhances the quality of life through improved infrastructure, efficient services, and sustainable practices. So, which cities have successfully turned a futuristic vision into a tangible reality?

To identify leading U.S. cities in tech-driven urban development, we analyzed over 370 cities across 13 key metrics, including AI and IoT companies, free Wi-Fi, zero-waste programs, transportation connectivity, and tech job opportunities.

The concept of smart cities has evolved from a futuristic vision to a tangible reality, with urban centers worldwide integrating technology and sustainability to enhance the quality of life for their residents. These cities employ data analytics, innovative infrastructure and eco-friendly initiatives to create connected and efficient urban environments.

So which are 2025’s top smart cities? To identify the U.S. cities making the biggest strides in technology-driven urban development, we analyzed more than 370 U.S. cities across 13 key metrics, including AI and IoT company presence, free Wi-Fi availability, zero-waste programs, transportation connectivity and tech job opportunities.

These metrics were categorized into three weighted groups: Smart Infrastructure and Connectivity (45%), Sustainability and Green Initiatives (35%) and Tech Job Market (20%), ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of technology-driven urban development.

Here are our main highlights: 

  • Atlanta claimed the top spot in multiple metrics, making it the 20th smartest city in our analysis.

  • The city has 120 coworking spaces available to its residents, ranking third for this metric. Meanwhile, its 661 EV charging points place it fourth nationally.

  • Thanks to the two airports in its vicinity and the 150 free Wi-Fi spots, it comes in the fifth spot for these metrics, while its 25 AI companies place it 11th.

  • Atlanta has 605 LEED-certified green buildings, coming in the 17th spot for this metric, while its 18 EV promotion actions place it 16th.

  • Nationally, the West Coast and Northeastern regions lead the way in adopting cutting-edge technology for urban sustainability. California stands out with four cities — San Francisco, San Jose, Los Angeles, and San Diego — ranking among the top 10.
