City Council Honors Daniel Anthony Graveline, Jr. for a Lifetime of Distinguished Service

WHEREAS, Daniel Anthony Graveline, Jr., born on July 1, 1941, in Toronto, Canada, and raised in the Tennessee Valley area, dedicated his life to excellence, leadership, and service; and
WHEREAS, Dan’s extraordinary journey began with humble origins, paying his way through college as a Merchant Marine on the Great Lakes, where he became the youngest wheelsman by the age of 19, and continued through his academic achievements at Southern Illinois University, where he earned his bachelor’s in business and master’s in education; and
WHEREAS, his career in the hospitality and convention industry began at the Indiana Convention Center and the LA Convention Center, before he answered the call to serve as the first Executive Director of the Georgia World Congress Center Authority in 1976, transforming Atlanta into a premier global destination for conventions and events; and
WHEREAS, under his visionary leadership, the Georgia World Congress Center expanded three times—1985, 1992, and 2003—cementing its place among the nation’s top-tier convention facilities and bringing immeasurable economic and cultural benefits to the city of Atlanta; and
WHEREAS, Dan’s critical role as treasurer of the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games laid the groundwork for the 1996 Summer Olympics, further establishing Atlanta as a global hub for entertainment, sports, and international collaboration; and
WHEREAS, his steadfast leadership and consensus-building abilities guided Atlanta through political challenges, economic shifts, and crises, resulting in the successful hosting of landmark events such as the Super Bowl, Final Four tournaments, and SEC football championships; and
WHEREAS, his spirit and legacy live on in the thriving downtown district of Atlanta—in the bustling corners of Centennial Olympic Park, in the halls of the Georgia World Congress Center filled with employees, visitors, and exhibitors, and in the packed seats of entertainment venues across the city;
WHEREAS, Dan Graveline served with distinction as the first Chairman of the Peachtree Corners Downtown Development Authority (DDA), demonstrating exceptional leadership, vision, and dedication to the city's economic growth and vitality; and
WHEREAS, under his guidance, the Downtown Development Authority played a pivotal role in the planning, financing, and development of the Peachtree Corners Town Center, transforming it into a vibrant economic and social hub that fosters community engagement, commerce, and innovation; and
WHEREAS, his service has been instrumental in shaping the city's downtown identity, creating a dynamic and thriving public space that enhances the quality of life for all who live, work, and play in Peachtree Corners;
NOW, THEREFORE, let it be proclaimed that Daniel Anthony Graveline, Jr.’s profound impact on the City of Peachtree Corners and greater metro Atlanta, their people, and their future generations is hereby honored and celebrated, ensuring his contributions and legacy will inspire and guide us for years to come.
