Thursday, April 10th, 2025
Atlanta Ballet is offering a triple treat of the fresh, the captivating and the unexpected with the mixed bill closing its season, Catch Tuplet, premiering May 9-11 at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. This trio of works by a line-up of famed European choreographers includes a series of swinging, spinning and exciting dances culminating in an intriguing world premiere.
“You’ll hear the term ‘pure movement’ to describe this exquisite mixed bill with two return engagements and a very unexpected finale by one of our favorite choreographer collaborators,” said Atlanta Ballet Artistic Director Gennadi Nedvigin. “The perfect finale to a year of stunning performances,Catch, Tuplet and Hypnagogia are powerhouse productions which promise to be a dream for lovers of propulsive dance.”
Catch, created by British choreographer Liam Scarlett and set to music by Philip Glass, world premiered on the Atlanta Ballet stage six years ago as part of the company’s Director’s Choice program. The work is marked by mesmerizing movement and music and will showcase the athleticism of Atlanta Ballet’s dancers in action.
Tuplet, from Swedish choreographer Alexander Ekman with music and sound by Mikael Karlsson, is back by popular demand from 2020’s Heart/Beatprogram. Using the dancers’ bodies as percussion instruments, each of the performers creates personal driving tempos that mix with popular jazz standards. The result is an unmatched, immersive multi-sensory experience.
Along with these two return engagements, the third part of the mixed bill will be the world premiere Hypnagogia by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, the Belgian-Columbian choreographer fresh off the record-breaking success of Coco Chanel: The Life of a Fashion Icon, her twelfth narrative ballet. Inspired by the bridge between wakefulness and sleep, this world premiere utilizes movement to explore the fascinating state where dreams take flight and imagination is at its peak. As part of this new work, expect dancers to reach new heights and the production to add a dash of the unexpected, providing the perfect grace note to complete a creative season. Annabelle Lopez Ochoa is an award-winning and sought-after choreographer who has created ballets for more than 70 dance companies around the world and is the recipient of the Jacob's Pillow Dance Award.
