New Program Offers Rent Relief and Financial Coaching for Atlanta Firefighters
Wednesday, April 23rd, 2025
The Atlanta Fire Rescue Foundation (AFRF) announced today the launch of its new Housing Relief program in partnership with Operation HOPE, providing up to $1,000 in monthly rental assistance and financial literacy sessions for Atlanta Firefighters.
AFRF’s Housing Rental Relief Program supports sworn members of the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department by offering up to $1,000 per month in rental assistance for housing located within the City of Atlanta. As a part of the program participants are required to attend monthly financial literacy sessions, in partnership with Operation HOPE, that are designed to empower firefighters with strategies and best practices for lasting success.
The overarching goal of the program is to make it easier for Atlanta firefighters to live in the communities they serve. In doing so, the program enhances public safety, reduces commute times, and strengthens community ties. The program also provides direct economic benefit to program recipients and the city at large. The stipends are awarded based on salary and paid directly to rental property management for a maximum of 12 consecutive months.
“In a time of financial uncertainty, the ability to alleviate financial burdens associated with the rising costs of rent could not be timelier,” said Taos Wynn, President & CEO of the Atlanta Fire Rescue Foundation. “The Rental Relief program, in partnership with Operation Hope, directly addresses an urgent need and increases retention, while also equipping Atlanta firefighters with the knowledge for long term financial success.”
“We are honored to support Atlanta’s bravest become thriving members of the communities they so boldly defend,” said Operation HOPE founder and CEO, John Hope Bryant. “Our expert financial coaches stand ready to help these courageous men and women fulfill their dreams and aspirations, as they further their journey to financial independence and wealth building for themselves, their families, and their community.”
“The men and women of Atlanta Fire Rescue are the personification of community, so having them as neighbors of Atlanta residents only makes our city stronger. The Housing Rental Relief Program will provide valuable financial assistance for our current personnel and serve as a recruitment tool for future personnel. Thank you to AFRF and Operation HOPE for this innovative and thoughtful initiative,” said Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens.
“As firefighters we are committed to protecting this city—but we also need to take care of our own. This program gives our participating members the tools to build long-term financial stability,” said Fire Chief Roderick Smith. “Living closer to the communities we serve strengthens trust, improves response times, and deepens our connection with the people who count on us every day.”
Through this collaboration, AFRF and Operation HOPE are building a sustainable pathway for Atlanta’s Bravest to achieve financial independence and long-term stability. Monthly financial sessions will provide applicable education on budgeting, credit building, debt management, saving strategies, homeownership preparation, and other essential aspects of financial wellness. In addition to group sessions, one-on-one financial coaching, and the monthly rental stipends, the Atlanta Fire Rescue Foundation is looking to expand the program in 2026 to include more personalized support.
