Metro Atlanta’s Unemployment Rate Drops in April

The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that Atlanta recorded an unemployment rate of 3.0% in April, down six-tenths from a revised 3.6% in March. A year ago, the rate was 3.0%.
“This April, unemployment rates dropped across every region of Georgia,” said Labor Commissioner Bárbara Rivera Holmes. “When we connect Georgians with meaningful work, we're putting food on tables, creating stability for individuals and families, and building an economy where our children can see their future—right here at home. This is how we grow a stronger Georgia—one job, one family, one community at a time.”
The labor force in Atlanta decreased by 20,112 to 3,287,498. This number decreased by 11,837 compared to March 2024.
The number of employed decreased by 2,516 to 3,187,335 in April. Over the year, the number of employed decreased by 14,575 from a year earlier.
The number of unemployed decreased by 17,596 to 100,163 in April. Over the year, the number of unemployed rose by 2,738 from the previous year.
Atlanta ended April with 3,107,00 jobs. Jobs decreased by 2,200 over the month and by 7,000 over the year.
Over the month, jobs were up in accommodation and food Services, 3,400; administrative and support services, 2,300; arts, entertainment, and recreation, 2,200; real estate rental and leasing, 1,000; and transportation and warehousing, 900.
Jobs were down over the month in wholesale trade, -1,600; health care and social assistance, -1,200; retail trade, -700; finance and insurance, -600; and federal government, -400.
The sectors with the most over the year job gains included health care and social assistance, 17,500; local government, 4,500; arts, entertainment, and recreation, 3,100; management of companies and enterprises, 2,000; and state government, 1,700.
Jobs were down over the year in accommodation and food services, -5,000; transportation and warehousing, -4,400; administrative and support services, -3,900; retail trade, -2,700; and wholesale trade, -2,500.
In April, initial unemployment claims increased by 1,350 from the previous month to 12,960. Claims were up by 1,116 from April of the previous year.
