Aria Announces New Executive Chef
Wednesday, June 11th, 2025
Aria owner Andrés Loaiza announces that the acclaimed Atlanta restaurant has appointed Joseph Harrison as executive chef, marking an exciting new chapter for the Buckhead dining destination. The James Beard Award semifinalist and former executive chef of Savannah’s Common Thread steps into the role on Wednesday, June 18 following the retirement of legendary chef-owner Gerry Klaskala, who founded Aria 25 years ago.
Harrison was initially surprised when Klaskala reached out about the position. “Anyone working in this industry knows who Gerry Klaskala is,” says Harrison.
A few days later, Harrison drove from Savannah to Atlanta to meet with Loaiza and Klaskala. The pair had followed Harrison’s rising culinary career closely—from his early days at Mystic Grill in Conyers to his time at Cooks & Soldiers, Lazy Betty and Mujo. Most recently, Harrison helped open Common Thread in 2021, earning national acclaim and a James Beard semifinalist nod in the Best Chef: Southeast category alongside chef-owner Brandon Carter.
“Joseph’s talent and vision immediately stood out to us—not only in the way he approaches food but also in how he leads with integrity, curiosity and heart,” said Loaiza. “From the moment I sat down with him, it was clear he shared our commitment to creating meaningful experiences for guests. I’m excited for the future of Aria with Joseph at the helm in the kitchen.”
Loaiza had quietly visited Common Thread to experience Harrison’s food firsthand, impressed by dishes like North Carolina flounder with berbere spice and redfish with jalapeño emulsion and pickled green tomato. Harrison says the opportunity to work alongside Loaiza was a major factor in his decision to join Aria.
“I quickly learned Andrés and I share a passion for hospitality,” Harrison explains. “It’s rare to find someone who feels just as passionately about the front of house as you do about the kitchen.”
Aria was recently recognized as a 2025 James Beard Award finalist for Outstanding Hospitality, and Harrison sees his new role as a continuation of the restaurant’s legacy rather than a departure from his own path. “Some people ask why I’d walk away from a James Beard semifinalist restaurant,” he says. “But I see it as walking toward the chance to merge our two stories at Aria.”
Harrison acknowledges the responsibility of taking the reins from a beloved chef and institution, but he’s entering the role with humility and excitement. “I’m stepping into this position with a grateful heart and a commitment to uphold and evolve what makes Aria so special,” he says.
In addition to welcoming a Harrison as executive chef, Aria is undergoing several interior and exterior improvements including new china and glassware, new landscaping and exterior cosmetic changes—all to begin rolling out on June 18.
