Metro Atlanta Sees Rise in June Unemployment Rate

The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that the 29-county Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area recorded an unemployment rate of 3.6% in June, up three-tenths from a revised 3.3% in May. A year ago, the rate was 3.8%.

“June's unemployment trends tell a familiar story — Georgia's students are stepping into our workforce as schools let out for summer, creating the temporary unemployment and hiring fluctuations typical for this time of year,” said Georgia Labor Commissioner Bárbara Rivera Holmes. “With Georgia's recent historic announcement of 5 million jobs, these students are stepping into a local workforce that belongs to them, in a state that's proven over and over that when Georgians show up, opportunity follows.”

The labor force in Atlanta increased by 25,472 to 3,313,106. This number decreased by 9,056 compared to June 2024.

The number of employed increased by 14,169 to 3,194,355 in June. Over the year, the number of employed declined by 522 from a year earlier.

The number of unemployed increased by 11,303 to 118,751 in June. Over the year, the number of unemployed fell by 8,534 from the previous year.

Atlanta ended June with 3,136,200 jobs. Jobs increased by 19,200 from the previous month and by 21,000 over the year.

Over the month, jobs were up in arts, entertainment, and recreation, 4,700; administrative and support services, 3,800; health care and social assistance, 3,100; accommodation and food services, 3,000; and professional, scientific, and technical services, 1,800.
Jobs were down over the month in state government, 3,600; private educational services, 1,300; federal government, 600; durable goods manufacturing, 300; and computer infrastructure providers, data processing, web hosting, and related services, 100.

The industries with the most job gains over the year are health care and social assistance, 22,100; local government, 7,200; arts, entertainment, and recreation, 2,400; private educational services, 1,400; and finance and insurance, 1,300.

Jobs were down over the year in transportation, warehousing, and utilities, 4,900; specialty trade contractors, 2,800; wholesale trade, 2,500; retail trade, 2,200; and accommodation and food services, 2,000.

In June, initial unemployment claims decreased by 165 from the previous month to 11,807. Claims were down by 861 from June of the previous year.
