Marsy’s Law for Georgia, a leading victims’ rights advocacy group, is honored to present Congresswoman Lucy McBath (GA-06) with its prestigious Champion Award to commemorate the National Day of Remembrance for Homicide Victims this morning. The recognition celebrates McBath’s outspoken dedication and advocacy for victims’ rights.
Each year, Marsy’s Law for Georgia honors individuals or organizations that demonstrate outstanding commitment to advancing victims’ rights. Following the tragic loss of her son to gun violence in 2012, Rep. McBath has been an outspoken voice and proponent for families of homicide victims and an advocate of victims’ rights.

Alongside Congressman Tom Tiffany (WI-07), Congresswoman McBath reintroduced the Justice for Murder Victims Act in February 2025. The Act seeks to remove legislation that prohibits a defendant from being held accountable for murder if their victim succumbs to their injuries a “year-and-a-day” after their attack. The bill will provide families the tools to preserve the legacy of their lost family member with the ability to seek justice without an expiration date.

“We have long admired Congresswoman McBath’s commitment to supporting victims and their families,” said Brad Alexander of Marsy’s Law for Georgia. “The National Day of Remembrance for Homicide Victims provided the perfect opportunity to honor her dedication and leadership.”

The National Day of Remembrance for Homicide Victims has been observed on September 25 since 2007. Congress designated this day to commemroate the families of murder victims and recognize victim advocates and organizations that provide support, resources and counseling to families coping with homicide-related deaths. Marsy’s Law for Georgia applauds Rep. McBath for all her efforts in supporting and uplifting victims’ voices in the quest for healing and justice.

“When I received the phone call telling me that my son Jordan was killed, I became a member of a club no parent wants to join,” said Rep. Lucy McBath. “Through the pain and grief of losing a loved one, it is difficult to do simple things, and even harder to understand and advocate for your rights. I am deeply honored to receive the Champion Award from Marsy's Law for Georgia because I am committed to being a champion for families as they seek justice for their loved ones, just as I did for my son.”

Past recipients of the Marsy’s Law Champion Award include U.S. Sen. John Lewis, U.S. Sen. Reverend Raphael Warnock, Cobb County District Attorney Flynn Broady, former Georgia Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan and Georgia’s First Lady Marty Kemp. Additional recipients will be announced throughout the year.
