Skanska Begins Deconstruction Process at MARTA Five Points Station

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Tuesday, November 11th, 2025

Global construction and development firm Skanska has started the surgical deconstruction of the MARTA Five Points Station canopy in Atlanta, Georgia. The canopy deconstruction is the first phase in reimagining the 144,400-square-foot transit hub in the heart of Atlanta into a vibrant city center, enhancing transit connectivity, customer amenities, and safety.

The existing concrete canopy comprises pre-stressed concrete beams, post-tension cables, hollow-core slabs, glazing, and columns, and requires Skanska to have an in-depth engineering understanding of the structure to systematically deconstruct it. This work will take place while the underground station remains operational for customers. This process paves the way for a new, open-concept station and 32,000-square-foot mass timber canopy with three new pedestrian entrances.

“We’re excited to contribute to the revitalization of the Five Points Station as MARTA and the city work to create a more dynamic urban core in downtown Atlanta,” said Matt Frey, executive vice president and general manager for Skanska USA Building’s Atlanta-based building operations. “We look forward to collaborating with MARTA on this transformative project that is poised to elevate the experience for transit customers exploring metro Atlanta.”

Since 1981, Five Points Station, the largest and busiest rail station in the MARTA system, has been the heart of Atlanta’s downtown and the central transfer point between all rail lines. The redesigned station will feature communal spaces, public art, and sections designated for urban agriculture, enhancing the overall commuter experience.

Deconstruction is expected to be completed in 2027, followed by construction of the new canopy and plaza. The station will remain open with modified entry points throughout the deconstruction process. Follow important project updates here.
