Unemployment Falls Across Georgia’s Regional Commissions

The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that unemployment fell across Georgia’s 12 regional commissions in September. 

Unemployment in Georgia dropped across nearly every region in September," said Labor Commissioner Bárbara Rivera Holmes. "As we approach the end of the year, we’re staying focused on keeping workers ready, businesses strong, and opportunity growing across the state.”

Atlanta Regional Commission

  • The unemployment rate was down one-tenth to 3.4% over-the-month. The rate was 3.4% one year ago.
  • The labor force was up 15,244 over-the-month and down 1,077 over-the-year, to 2,708,519.
  • The number of employed was up 17,307 over-the-month and down 1,274 over-the-year, to 2,616,474.
  • Initial claims were down 225 over-the-month and up 6 over-the-year, to 9,034.

Central Savannah River

  • The unemployment rate was down one-tenth to 4.1% over-the-month. The rate was 4.5% one year ago.
  • The labor force was up 2,246 over-the-month and down 13 over-the-year, to 209,303.
  • The number of employed was up 2,481 over-the-month and up 826 over-the-year, to 200,825.
  • Initial claims were up 124 over-the-month and down 44 over-the-year, to 915.

Coastal Georgia

  • The unemployment rate was down two-tenths to 3.1% over-the-month. The rate was 3.0% one year ago.
  • The labor force was up 994 over-the-month and down 2,032 over-the-year, to 355,559.
  • The number of employed was up 1,819 over-the-month and down 2,197 over-the-year, to 344,531.
  • Initial claims were up 1 over-the-month and up 16 over-the-year, to 963.

Georgia Mountains

  • The unemployment rate was down three-tenths to 2.9% over-the-month. The rate was 2.8% one year ago.
  • The labor force was up 1,916 over-the-month and up 1,290 over-the-year, to 245,305.
  • The number of employed was up 2,570 over-the-month and up 1,056 over-the-year, to 238,152.
  • Initial claims were up 108 over-the-month, and up 29 over-the-year, to 754.
     

Heart of Georgia

  • The unemployment rate was down three-tenths to 3.7% over-the-month. The rate was 3.8% one year ago.
  • The labor force was up 1,844 over-the-month and down 223 over-the-year, to 118,694.
  • The number of employed was up 2,083 over-the-month and down 119 over-the-year, to 114,257.
  • Initial claims were up 502 over-the-month, and up 474 over-the-year, to 992.

Middle Georgia

  • The unemployment rate was down two-tenths to 3.6% over-the-month. The rate was 3.6% one year ago.
  • The labor force was up 1,617 over-the-month and down 303 over-the-year, to 223,613.
  • The number of employed was up 2,057 over-the-month and down 319 over-the-year, to 215,631.
  • Initial claims were down 20 over-the-month and up 62 over-the-year, to 751.

Northeast Georgia

  • The unemployment rate was down two-tenths to 3.2% over-the-month. The rate was 3.3% one year ago.
  • The labor force was up 2,691 over-the-month and down 716 over-the-year, to 350,589.
  • The number of employed was up 3,173 over-the-month and down 423 over-the-year, to 339,273.
  • Initial claims were down 98 over-the-month and down 203 over-the-year, to 941.

Northwest Georgia

  • The unemployment rate was down two-tenths to 3.2% over-the-month. The rate was 3.2% one year ago.
  • The labor force was up 3,926 over-the-month and up 628 over-the-year, to 458,308, an all-time high.
  • The number of employed was up 4,723 over-the-month and up 460 over-the-year, to 443,549, an all-time high.
  • Initial claims were up 212 over-the-month and down 328 over-the-year, to 1,951.
     

River Valley

  • The unemployment rate was down two-tenths to 4.1% over-the-month. The rate was 3.9% one year ago.
  • The labor force was up 1,361 over-the-month and up 464 over-the-year, to 145,990.
  • The number of employed was up 1,576 over-the-month and up 245 over-the-year, to 140,041.
  • Initial claims were down 16 over-the-month and down 31 over-the-year, to 503.

Southern Georgia

  • The unemployment rate was down three-tenths to 3.5% over-the-month. The rate was 3.6% one year ago.
  • The labor force was up 1,633 over-the-month and down 1,221 over-the-year, to 175,178.
  • The number of employed was up 1,982 over-the-month and down 1,111 over-the-year, to 168,995.
  • Initial claims were down 32 over-the-month and down 47 over-the-year, to 573.

Southwest Georgia

  • The unemployment rate was down two-tenths to 3.7% over-the-month. The rate was 3.6% one year ago.
  • The labor force was up 2,065 over-the-month and down 1,529 over-the-year, to 148,302.
  • The number of employed was up 2,269 over-the-month and down 1,717 over-the-year, to 142,755.
  • Initial claims were down 64 over-the-month and up 108 over-the-year, to 533.

Three Rivers

  • The unemployment rate was down two-tenths to 3.2% over-the-month. The rate was 3.3% one year ago.
  • The labor force was up 1,767 over-the-month and up 32 over-the-year, to 269,620.
  • The number of employed was up 2,198 over-the-month and up 153 over-the-year, to 260,876.
  • Initial claims were up 20 over-the-month and down 44 over-the-year, to 841.
