Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Wednesday, February 25th, 2026

Breakthrough Atlanta is seeking undergraduate college students with a deep interest in community impact and a passion for working with students to apply for teaching residencies for summer 2026. Two opportunities are available: an eight-week program for middle schoolers and a three-week program for rising 10th graders.
The paid fellow internships support Breakthrough Atlanta’s dual mission to increase academic opportunity for highly motivated, underserved students and get them into college ready to succeed; and inspire and develop the next generation of teachers and educational leaders.

Teaching Fellows gain first-hand teaching experience through instructing students in Breakthrough Atlanta’s Summer Program, a program that combats the summer learning loss that occurs among underserved students. It is a component of Breakthrough Atlanta’s six-year, tuition-free, year-round program that provides a pathway to college for hundreds of middle and high school students each year.

Below are details on both opportunities.

AmeriCorps Teaching Fellows

This eight-week fellowship includes leadership and classroom training with real-life experience teaching middle schoolers in Breakthrough Atlanta’s High School Readiness Program. The transformational program gives undergraduate college students the unique opportunity to get a head start on their careers as educators through teaching and leadership training in addition to classroom instruction.

Teaching Fellows practice skills applicable to both school and professional settings while completing 300 hours of service as teachers, mentors, role models, and learners themselves. Topics include lesson planning, feedback techniques, family conferences, presentations, time management, project planning, teaching academic and elective classes, and learning to work with a diverse team of colleagues and students.
Summer Leadership Institute AmeriCorps Fellows

In this three-week program, Fellows co-facilitate enrichment sessions for a STEAM-focused summer enrichment program for rising 10th graders in Breakthrough’s College Prep Program. This fellowship is designed for current undergraduate college students pursuing a major or showing interest in secondary education, school counseling, education policy, or STEAM.
Both fellowships are open to college students of all majors, whether or not a student has decided to pursue a career in education. Education coursework is not a prerequisite.

Participants receive a stipend and education award. Both fellowships are located on the campuses of the Lovett School and Emory University.

Following their experience, approximately 75% of the Teaching Fellows indicate that they are more likely to pursue a career in education because of their internship at Breakthrough Atlanta.

Breakthrough Atlanta is grounded in the philosophy of students teaching students with the belief that every student deserves access to excellent educational opportunities that pave the way to thriving futures.
