Black History Celebrated Through Storytelling of Black Innovators & Creative Play at Children’s Museum

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Wednesday, February 18th, 2026

Throughout the month of February, Children’s Museum of Atlanta invites families, little ones and educators to celebrate Black History Month by exploring the stories, creativity and innovation of Black leaders past and present who continue to shape our world. Through hands-on STEM challenges, aviation-inspired storytelling and creative art experiences, children learn why history matters while celebrating trailblazers who lift up their communities and inspire future generations. From readings honoring the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen, to engineering challenges spotlighting Black astronauts and interactive programs exploring the science of flight, the Museum offers meaningful learning through play all month long. As part of the month’s celebration, Educator Day invites teachers to experience the Museum alongside family and friends while learning more about field trips, on-the-go programs and educator resources designed to support students of all ages.

February Programming
Through Tuesday, March 3
Throughout February, daily programming invites young learners to explore creativity, science and storytelling through the theme of flight. On the CMA Stage, “Wind Flyers” by Angela Johnson celebrates the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen, while the How Does a Plane Fly? activity introduces the mechanics of flight through interactive demonstrations. At the Science Bar, children design and test landers while learning about stability, shock absorption and the achievements of Black astronauts. In the Art Studio, guests draw inspiration from abstract artist Mavis Pusey, creating bold, city-inspired compositions using pre-cut shapes and imaginative design.

3 p.m. “Wind Flyers” by Angela Johnson

Science Bar
Small scientists explore concepts of stability and shock absorption by designing landers that safely deliver astronauts to the planets they are studying. The program also highlights Black History Month by celebrating and teaching guests about the achievements of Black astronauts, including Michael Anderson, Yvonne Darlene Cagle and Mae C. Jemison.

Art Studio

Tiny artists dive in to the life and work of abstract artist Mavis Pusey, a painter and printmaker known for her bold, hard-edge colors inspired by the dynamic cityscapes where she lived. Children create their own abstract artwork using a blank canvas and pre-cut shapes in a variety of colors and forms. With no scissors in sight, young artists are encouraged to experiment, arrange and design a piece that feels visually exciting and uniquely their own.

Led by the accomplished pilot and designed to spark curiosity about travel, teamwork and big dreams, this interactive experience brings the wonder of flight to life while reinforcing the Museum’s mission to inspire imagination and discovery through the power of play.
