Dr. Shamie Das, an emergency physician, educator, and policy leader, was installed as President of the Medical Association of Atlanta (MAA) for 2026 – 2027 at the MAA Summer Gala at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History on July 11, 2026. Over 250 attendees celebrated the annual event, which is open to all MAA members, sponsors, and guests.

Established in 1854, the MAA has over 2,500 members and is the largest county medical society in Georgia. Dr. Das will succeed Dr. Dr. Carmen Kavali, board-certified plastic surgeon and Founder of Monarch Plastic Surgery & Skin Renewal Center.

Dr. Das received a Bachelor of Science from Emory University, a Master of Public Health from Rollins School of Public Health, and both his MD and MBA through the Boonshoft Physician Leadership Development Program at Wright State University. During college he worked as an emergency medical technician. He later returned to Emory for residency and now serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine. He has been approved for promotion to Associate Professor this fall.

Dr. Das has served on the MAA Executive Committee since 2023. In addition to his MAA leadership, Dr. Das has been active in organized medicine since 2010 and has held regional and national positions within state medical societies and the American Medical Association (AMA).

He is active within the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and locally he serves as the current Georgia College of Emergency Medicine (GCEP) President. Dr. Das is also Vice Chair of the Medical Association of Georgia (MAG) AMA Delegation. Dr. Das co-founded the nation's first completely medical student-run podcast, “RadioRounds”. The project aspires to explore the "hidden curriculum” of humanism in medicine and the joy of practice from accomplished physician authors, leaders and innovators.

As a long-time delegate to the MAG House of Delegates from MAA, Dr. Das has over a decade of experience in the development of health policy. He was a 2024 – 2025 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellow. He has authored and co-authored numerous policies to ensure patient access to emergency care. He is passionate about health reform that improves access and affordability through solutions that improve transparency, competition and choice in the healthcare marketplace.

Dr. Das will be joined on next year’s Executive Committee by Dr. Anna Skold (The Southeast Permanente Medical Group), named President-Elect, Dr. Jin Lee (Northside Hospital), named Treasurer, and Dr. Dimitri Cassimatis (Emory University), named Secretary. Dr. Kavali will continue to serve on the Executive Committee in a Board Chair capacity.
