City Council Approves Atlanta Jail Sale to Fulton County
Wednesday, October 21st, 2026
The Atlanta City Council narrowly approved the $68 million sale of the city's jail to Fulton County, ending a years-long saga over the detention center's fate.
After a long and confusing debate in which several members, led by Julian Bond, questioned the deal, the resolution to allow the transaction passed 8-7.
"Do something bigger, better than this," Bond said before the vote. "It's a rare opportunity."
The Atlanta City Detention Center, located at 254 Peachtree Street SW, is a 471,000-square-foot facility on roughly 3.56 acres, with 17 stories (three below ground, 14 above ground), according to a CBRE Group value analysis. It currently operates as the city's jail and arrest-processing center, as well as a more recently established diversion services center. It was built in 1995 with a capacity for up to 1,300 inmates.
