Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta announces $60.8 million in grants to nonprofits year-to-date. Of that, $2.4 million in competitive grants have been awarded to 38 nonprofit organizations in the Foundation’s most recent competitive grant cycle. In addition to these competitive grants, the Community Foundation has also awarded $58.4 million in grants to nonprofits through donor-advised funds from members of the Foundation’s philanthropic family.
 
The Foundation’s competitive grants go toward general operating support for the nonprofit recipients to use at their discretion to fulfill their missions. Nonprofits complete a rigorous, six-month process that includes a full application, review and site visit prior to being awarded a competitive grant. Grants have been awarded to well-established organizations as well as newer nonprofits that are just hitting their stride by tackling innovative solutions to our region’s challenges.
 
“General operating support is the missing fuel for nonprofits,” said Alicia Philipp, president, Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta. “Our thorough competitive grantmaking cycle is supplemented many times over through donor-advised grants thanks to the generous philanthropists that continue to boost our region. Now, in this season of giving, is when we see that generosity continue to grow even more.”
 
The $2.4 million in competitive grants awarded support four of the Community Foundation’s Impact Areas: arts, community development, education and well-being. The Foundation also awarded place-based grants in two counties through its Spark Clayton and Spark Morgan funds.
 
“For nonprofits, unrestricted, general operating support funds can be the hardest to raise, as many grants are restricted to use only for specific programs or projects,” said Lita Pardi, director, resource deployment for the Community Foundation. “Feedback we consistently get from nonprofits indicates that they see an operating support grant from the Community Foundation as a seal of approval for their mission and vision. Some nonprofits also tell us they use our rigorous application process as an opportunity to review their internal practices to analyze what they’re doing right and where they need to strengthen.”
