Staff Report From Metro Atlanta CEO
Tuesday, March 17th, 2020
The Buckhead Community Improvement District (BCID), a self-taxing district that uses additional commercial property taxes to accelerate infrastructure improvements, will begin construction on three infrastructure projects throughout the Buckhead community in 2020, kicking off what the CID is calling its "year of construction."
The projects slated for construction include the ADA sidewalk improvements, West Village Streetscapes and Peachtree Road Complete Street Phase Three. These projects will enhance the curb appeal within the CID’s boundaries, and help make the district safe and accessible for all residents and commuters.
"After much deliberation and careful planning with the City of Atlanta and the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), the CID is thrilled to begin construction on these projects," says Jim Durrett, executive director – BCID. "As we enter the new decade, we believe these enhancements will help us accomplish our mission of creating a more livable and walkable Buckhead that will create meaningful connections between the commercial and residential communities."
ADA Sidewalk Improvements
The BCID’s ADA sidewalk improvement project will repair and replace approximately 4.5 miles of sidewalks, while adding ADA features such as handicap accessible ramps on several roads within the CID’s boundaries. Construction on the first phase, located on Maple Drive, began in January and was recently completed. The next phase is scheduled to resume on Pharr Road in March. The ADA project is funded by BCID tax dollars and a contribution from the Renew Atlanta Infrastructure Bond and the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax for Transportation (TSPLOST) program. The CID has contracted SD&C, Inc. to carry out the construction, which is scheduled for completion in late summer of 2020.
West Village Streetscapes
The second project to break ground is the West Village Streetscapes project, which will replace and repair sidewalks and roadways in Buckhead’s West Village while adding streetscape improvements to increase curb appeal and walkability around the area. At the same time, the City and GDOT will install new stormwater infrastructure along Roswell and East Andrews roads. The project is funded by BCID with stormwater support from the City of Atlanta and GDOT, and Astra Group, Inc. has been contracted to complete construction. The West Village Streetscapes project is scheduled to begin construction in March and conclude by the end of 2020.
Peachtree Road Complete Street Phase Three
The third project is the Peachtree Road Complete Street Phase Three, the final step in fulfilling the Peachtree Road Scoping Study. This project will provide roadway, pedestrian and streetscape improvements on Peachtree Road from Maple Drive to Shadowlawn Avenue. Bids for the project’s construction opened on March 9 and construction is scheduled to begin shortly after the contract is awarded. The project is funded by BCID, GDOT, the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank and the Federal Highway Administration.
