Staff Report From Metro Atlanta CEO

Monday, July 27th, 2015

The Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs today announced the creation of new public artwork that will be permanently displayed in the heart of the Ben Hill neighborhood in Southwest Atlanta. “A Window to the Sky” is created by internationally renowned artist Agostino Iacurci who chose the City’s District 11 neighborhood to create an innovative and contemporary outdoor mural that reflects this Atlanta community.

“Our mission is to enhance the quality of life through cultural experiences that can serve as an international model,” said Camille Russell Love, executive director, Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs. “The City of Atlanta is pleased to partner with Herman Miller Cares and All City Canvas in bringing this signature public artwork to this highly visible intersection in the Ben Hill community.”

Herman Miller Cares, which is the philanthropic arm of the Herman Miller Company, is the generous sponsor of the artist mural, as well as the sponsor of a three-day children’s artist workshop that was held during the Camp Best Friends summer program at the Center of Hope at Ben Hill. The community outreach component of this project allowed for an Italian and Mexican artist team to provide a true cultural experience for Atlanta’s youth. The campers who participated in the Camp Best Friends summer program held at the Center of Hope at Ben Hill provided inspiration to artist Agostino Iacurci, who will use that inspiration and incorporate it into the finished mural project.

“Public art enhances communities throughout Atlanta. I am thrilled to work with the Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs to bring this enhancement to Southwest Atlanta.” said Councilmember Keisha Lance Bottoms, District 11. “Most importantly, the children in our community have had the opportunity to participate in bringing this mural to life. This project is in perfect alignment with the "Invest in Southwest" initiative, which focuses on economic development and community improvement throughout Southwest Atlanta.”

The exterior wall space on the building where “A Window to the Sky” mural will be created and displayed is generously donated by the H.J. Russell Company. The building is located at 3721-B Campbellton Road, SW Atlanta GA 30331. Beginning July 23 through July 29, 2015, the community will be able to watch as Agostino Iacurci creates a live canvas for his work at the corner of Fairburn and Campbellton Road in Southwest Atlanta.
