Staff Report From Metro Atlanta CEO

Monday, February 22nd, 2016

The Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation will conduct a vision screening for the students of Dunbar Elementary School (500 Whitehall Terrace SW, Atlanta, GA 30312) on Tuesday, February 23rdfrom 9:30am – 12:30pm.

Over 350 children will be screened, which will indicate if they are in need of a referral to an eye doctor. Students who do not pass will receive follow-up care, including comprehensive eye exams and eyeglasses through the Lighthouse's Vision Clinic and Optical Lab.

Up to 80% of what a child learns in their first 12 years is visual, making the early detection of vision issues vital to their success in and outside of the classroom. For children specifically, vision screenings often identify underlying issues that have attributed to behavioral issues and/or poor academic performance. Additionally, conditions such amblyopia (lazy eye) need to be identified and treated before age 7 to prevent permanent vision loss.

The Lighthouse uses state-of-the-art digital screening devices that are optimized for mass screenings and deliver results in a matter of seconds. Of the screenings conducted by the Lighthouse in the last year, 3 out of 10 resulted in a referral for an eye exam or follow-up care with an eye doctor.
