Smart Lunch, Smart Kid Closes Summer by Serving One Millionth Meal this Week
Staff Report From Metro Atlanta CEO

Action Ministries’ Smart Lunch, Smart Kid program will close out the summer by serving its 1 millionth meal over the program’s 5-year history to Georgia’s children on Friday, Aug. 5. Widespread community support and local investment has ensured that thousands of the approximately 1 million food-insecure children in Georgia have been served during the five-year history of the program.
Approximately 1 million children in Georgia are eligible to receive free or reduced-price lunch at school, a crucial meal that disappears in the summer. Smart Lunch, Smart Kid, through an extensive network of thousands of volunteers, partners and donors, ensures that these children are fed in the summer and also receive educational enrichment. Unlike other feeding programs, Action Ministries delivers lunches to children in their neighborhoods removing the barrier of lack of transportation. Reaching the benchmark of 1 million meals served was the organization’s goal when this summer’s program kicked off on June 1 at locations across 18 Georgia counties.
“Thanks to our many volunteers and corporate partners, Smart Lunch, Smart Kid has been able to expand each year,” said John R. Moeller, Jr., president and CEO of Action Ministries. “There is a tremendous need for this program because we know a child’s mind and body do not stop growing during the summer. Their access to healthy meals and educational enrichment shouldn’t stop either.”
