Digital Collection Details Eastern Air Lines History, Strike

Georgia State University Library’s Southern Labor Archives has introduced the Eastern Air Lines Digital Collection, representing various aspects of Eastern’s history, including labor, management, public relations, mediation, corporate culture, marketing, media coverage and operations.
It also provides a look into the history of the airline, its fleet, operations and employees, as well as public perception of the airline in good times and bad.
The Digital Collection contains documentation from diverse, unique collections, including:
- The records of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, who represented the ground crew at Eastern, including contracts and media coverage of its strike against Eastern Airlines.
- The collection of Carolyn Lee Wills, former director of the Eastern Air Lines' Southern Region Public Relations Office, including press releases, photographs, newsletters, destination files, operations information and artifacts.
- The Bill Usery papers, which include the mediation history of Eastern Air Lines prior to and during the strike.
- Astronaut Frank Borman’s papers, which chronicle his work as the president and CEO of Eastern Air Lines.
- The Jim Ashlock collection, composed of Eastern’s annual reports, coverage of the airline’s dissolution, television ads and information about daily operations during the strike.
- The Martha Hamilton collection composed of notebooks, news clippings and other items from the Washington Times’ reporter’s coverage of Eastern, 1989-1991.
- The Adrienne Cohen collection, featuring radio and print ads, including Eastern’s “The Wings of Man” radio commercials featuring Orson Welles.
- The papers of John Chaknis, a member of the Air Line Pilots Association, who collected materials related to ALPA’s strike against Eastern.
