Georgia Superintendent of Schools to Recognize Georgia Cyber Academy for Family Engagement
Staff Report From Metro Atlanta CEO
Tuesday, November 8th, 2016
Helping to debunk a longstanding myth that online families are not sufficiently engaged in student learning, Georgia Superintendent of Schools Richard Woods will visit Georgia Cyber Academy on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 10 a.m. to congratulate the virtual school’s family engagement team for winning the Department of Education’s Parent Engagement Month video contest.
The winning video, produced by GCA family engagement members and shown to more than 1,200 parents and educators at the 2016 Georgia Family Engagement Conference, showcases specific strategies and best practices for parental involvement in student learning.
“We conduct regular and meaningful engagement with the families of our students,” said Maria Blencowe, GCA’s high school family engagement coordinator, who produced the video. “We’re demonstrating we are a real school just like all of the others in the state of Georgia.”
Superintendent Woods will present the family engagement team with a certificate at an assembly during Wednesday’s visit. In addition, he will have a brief meet and greet session with GCA’s Student Advisory Council and will tour the school’s classes and offices. You are cordially invited to go “behind the scenes” to show your audience how virtual learning works!
