Thursday, November 3rd, 2016
Lab Atlanta and Leadership Atlanta are pleased to announce their partnership in establishing Lab Atlanta as the high school model for civic leadership in Atlanta. Students accepted into Lab Atlanta will be mentored by LEAD and/or Leadership Atlanta members and alumni, invited to contribute as part of Leadership Atlanta working groups, and given unique opportunities to connect with leadership around the city. In addition, Pat Upshaw Monteith, President and CEO of Leadership Atlanta, will join the Lab Atlanta Advisory Board.
“Leadership Atlanta is honored to have an opportunity to partner with Lab Atlanta as they develop the future leaders of greater Atlanta,” said Monteith.
Lab Atlanta is a Midtown-based semester school for 10th graders offering an honors-level academic curriculum and immersive, city-based design and innovation experience. Students apply to attend and, if accepted and enrolled, leave their home school for one semester to join other curious and engaged students from the city’s public and independent schools. Students earn core academic credits in a diverse and inclusive environment that builds civic leadership, design, and innovation skills.
Lab Atlanta is sponsored by The Lovett School and supported by the generous contributions of individuals, families, and leading local and national foundations.
Lab Atlanta's home, in the Iconologic building at 40 Inwood Circle--across the street from WSB-TV and SCAD Digital Learning Center and just behind the Temple on Peachtree--will offer students and faculty 3 floors and 7,000 square-feet for community rooms, breakout spaces, student studio/workspace, a small makerspace, a reception area, and individual faculty offices.
Laura Deisley, Lovett’s Director of Strategic Innovation, serves as Lab Atlanta’s Founding Director and is leading the development alongside Associate Director Mike Pardee (from Rice University) and three founding faculty members: Agnes Browning, Karl Hwang, and Aretina Hamilton. In addition to Leadership Atlanta, some of the strategic partners include: Dr. Carl DiSalvo and Georgia Tech’s Public Design Workshop; Scott Sanchez of Stanford d. School and founder of Innovators Atlanta; Dr. Gregory Ellison of Emory University and founder of Fearless Dialogues; Diana Laufenberg, Executive Director of Inquiry Schools, and Jaimie Cloud of The Cloud Institute.
"We are honored to be recognized by Leadership Atlanta as the high school model for civic engagement. I am thrilled that our diverse student body will have such extraordinary access to mentors and the opportunity to learn and contribute alongside inspired leaders from around greater Atlanta," said Deisley.
Applications will be accepted from current 10th graders until December 1 for the upcoming spring 2017 semester. Current 9th graders may apply for fall 2017 or spring 2018 beginning December 1. For more
