New Street Honors Former District 9 Resident

Atlanta City Councilmember Felicia Moore will participate in a new street naming ceremony at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 24 to honor Mrs. Azalee Stewart Hester Wharton.

Brock Built Homes will name two streets in their newly developed WestTown subdivision in the Blandtown neighborhood in honor of the former District 9 resident. The ceremony is at 1325 English Street, NW 30318.

Blandtown is in the west midtown area of Atlanta.  It is located along either side of Huff Road from Howell Mill Road west to Marietta Boulevard.

Mrs. Wharton was born in Atlanta on March 21, 1924.  She had a passion for extended family, the community, and the citizens of Blandtown.  She served faithfully as president of the Blandtown Neighborhood Association for over 50 years.  She was instrumental – along  with  other  residents – in  many  community   endeavors   that included  acquiring  resources  for  youth,  the  name  change  of  Blandtown  Elementary  School  to John P. Whittaker Elementary  School, MARTA service for Blandtown, and pavement  of several streets.

Mrs. Wharton passed away on April 22, 2011.
