Staff Report From Metro Atlanta CEO
Monday, September 25th, 2017
South Atlanta nonprofit Caring For Others Inc. had already been collecting donations and preparing to deliver disaster relief to Hurricane Harvey victims in Texas when Hurricane Irma wreaked havoc in the Caribbean, Florida and Georgia. Now Caring For Others, along with its key partner Delivering Good, will expand its relief effort to include Miami, Naples and the Keys in Florida and parts of South Georgia.
“We plan to distribute at least five tractor trailer truckloads to Texas and Florida,” said Eslene Richmond-Shockley, president and CEO of Caring For Others. “After natural disasters of this magnitude, many thousands are left without salvageable necessities like clothing, shoes, household items and all of the little things like a clean toothbrush of a bar of soap. That’s why we are preparing to take these major distributions to the people who were affected.”
Trucks are expected to leave Caring For Others’ South Atlanta warehouse by the end of September.
Caring For Others is collecting donations of new, wrapped items from individuals and will receive the majority of donations from manufacturers and partners like Delivering Good. Interested Atlantans can get involved as volunteers, donors or supporters at caring4others.org. Caring For Others thanks the Georgia Chapter of National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives for its support of this relief effort.
No stranger to hurricane disaster relief, Caring For Others was a young organization when Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in 2005. Well-situated to help Katrina victims from its headquarters in Atlanta, Caring For Others became a national go-to organization for agency and manufacturer donations to help the victims, many of whom relocated to Georgia. After Katrina, Caring For Others quickly expanded.
To date, Caring For Others has served more than 3 million individuals in the United States and throughout the world. In 2016 and 2017, Caring For Others spearheaded the Convoy of Care to South Georgia tornado victims and Baton Rouge, Louisiana flood victims.
