Staff Report From Metro Atlanta CEO

Winship marked its 80th anniversary in 2017 with a huge accomplishment: designation as a National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center. The comprehensive designation is both a vote of confidence and material support for Winship's innovative research that is improving the way cancer is prevented, diagnosed, and treated, and its work in educating the public and future generations of cancer researchers.
"The greatest difference between being designated as a cancer center and being designated as a comprehensive center is clear evidence that we are positively impacting the cancer problem in Georgia," says Winship Executive Director Walter J. Curran, Jr., MD.
As Georgia's NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center, Winship joins an elite network of the top cancer centers in the country. The comprehensive designation is given to cancer centers that demonstrate outstanding research across a spectrum, from foundational science in the labs to translational research in the clinics. The designation also recognizes Winship’s community-based research and its commitment to serving the people of Georgia.
The Winship Year in Review video for 2017 includes Winship doctors and scientists talking about what the comprehensive designation means to them, and it features comments from supportive community members, like former Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, who share in Winship's achievement of this milestone.
