Staff Report From Metro Atlanta CEO

Wednesday, February 21st, 2018

Cumberland Academy of Georgia, an Atlanta special-needs school, announced that it will be hosting its annual spring fundraising gala on Saturday evening, March 17, 2018. As March 17 is St. Patrick's Day, the school chose "Let's ShamROCK" as this year's theme. The event will kick off at 6:30 p.m. and feature a dinner, dancing, and casino-style games. There will also be live and silent auctions and a raffle. Some of the items and prizes featured this year are a Big Green Egg®, different types of jewelry, vacation accommodations on a private island in Belize, and a New York City condo for a weekend away,.

"Each year we host a gala to celebrate the special students of Cumberland and to raise funding for a specific need of the school," says Debbi Scarborough, founding director of Cumberland Academy of Georgia. "Each year, the event is magical and a fun celebration. Our goal is to have everyone leave with a smile on their face and a new understanding of the beauty of our school. Cumberland knows how to host a fabulous evening for a wonderful cause!"

The "Let's ShamROCK" spring fundraising gala will take place at the Cumberland Academy of Georgia, located at 650-A Mount Vernon Highway, NE, in Atlanta, Georgia, 30328.

In addition to learning in the classroom, Cumberland students volunteer in the community, work part-time and attend field studies coordinated with curriculum. As Cumberland has grown in number of students, there is a need for an additional bus. Thus, this year, funds raised at the gala will buy a bus for the school. "It's a good problem to have," states Doug Long, principal. "As the school grows and continues to add to the student body, we need additional transportation. The gala is a fun way for the community to support the students and staff. This is a wonderful way for the community to encourage the students in their many life challenges."

At every spring gala, Cumberland also honors an individual or organization for their contributions to the school. This year's event will be held in honor of Cumberland board member, Manny Arora, and his wife, Cathi.

"We are thrilled to be able to honor the Aroras at our 2018 gala," says Scarborough. "As a partner of the law firm Arora & LaScala, Manny is one of the most recognized names in criminal defense and sports law in the Southeast. He has served on our board of directors since 2009, and has brought with him many good ideas and helpful perspectives. Manny and Cathi are the parents of a Cumberland student, and both of them have been strong supporters of Cumberland. We so appreciate all they do for us."
