The City of Atlanta announced that the North Avenue Smart Corridor has earned a National Recognition Award in the American Council of Engineering Companies 2018 Engineering Excellence Awards competition. The EEA competition is known as “the Academy Awards of the Engineering Industry.”

This is the fourth major award for the North Avenue Smart Corridor, which is funded by the Renew Atlanta Infrastructure Bond. The project was also named State Award Winner, Technology Systems by ACEC at the 2018 EEA State Competition, held February 24 in Atlanta. Previously, the North Avenue Smart Corridor received the 2017 Project of Significance Award from the Georgia Intelligent Transportation Society and the ACEC People’s Choice Award.

“The City of Atlanta is extremely proud to be recognized once again for the North Avenue Smart Corridor,” said Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms “The North Avenue Smart Corridor project represents the City’s commitment to using the latest Smart City technology to offer a better quality of life by creating a safer, more efficient place to live, work and play.”

The North Avenue Smart Corridor incorporates multiple Smart City technology components designed to facilitate and promote safety for pedestrian and bicycle traffic; use the latest adaptive traffic signals for a safer, more efficient flow of bus and vehicular traffic in real-time conditions; and prioritize fire engines and ambulances traveling along the corridor on emergency response calls.  Since the launch of the North Avenue Smart Corridor, there has been a 25 percent reduction in the accident rate along the route.

“I want to thank our engineering partners and Georgia Tech for their collaboration on this essential project,” said Faye DiMassimo, General Manager of the Renew Atlanta program. “A smart city is a data-driven city and the North Avenue Smart Corridor continues to keep Atlanta on the leading edge of innovation and entrepreneurship.”

The ACEC annual Engineering Excellence Awards competition recognizes engineering firms for projects that demonstrate an exceptional degree of innovation, complexity, achievement and value.

Renew Atlanta and its partner firm Atkins will be recognized at the EEA Gala Dinner and Awards Program on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 in Washington D.C.
