Staff Report From Metro Atlanta CEO
Thursday, September 6th, 2018
U.S. skyscrapers are an important part of the country's identity, standing as symbols of economic prosperity and cultural prestige. For this study we looked at buildings that rise at least 40 stories and 500 feet, including spires. All property types were included. Our main data sources for building characteristics were Yardi Matrix and CTBUH’s Skyscraper Center, complemented by proprietary research for data validation.
Here are some of the highlights:
Atlanta is one of the 18 U.S. cities that boast at least five skyscrapers. The Bank of America Plaza tower is the 15th tallest building in the country, as well as the tallest in Georgia;
In 1966, the 44-story, 556-foot tall State of Georgia building rose the highest in the Southeast;
The biggest skyscraper construction boom in the country started out in the 1960s and culminated in the 1980s;
While the 1980s was the peak decade of new office towers, after the year 2000 most of the new skyscrapers were residential;
So far this year, ten skyscrapers have been marked as completed, three of which soar above 1,000 feet;
The tallest building currently under construction is the 1,550-foot tall Central Park tower in New York, scheduled for completion in 2020.
