Marking Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful’s 19^th year of involvement in Gwinnett Coalition of Health and Human Services’ Great Days of Service, the 2018 iteration of the community-focused collection of projects has proven another “great” success. On October 20, 112 volunteers donated 448 hours of their time to canvas the area at the Upper Yellow Watershed in Lawrenceville. Over the course of the 4-hour cleanup event, they collected an estimated 11,000 pounds of litter – roughly the equivalent in weight to an elephant.

“I believe that any time a group of Gwinnettians gathers together to do good on behalf of our community and the environment, it’s a successful event,” said Sumner Gann, Program Manager for Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful (GCB). “In terms of results and sheer numbers, our 2018 Great Days of Service project was particularly successful. Although we had a slightly smaller group of volunteers than in years past, we got so much accomplished. In addition to removing 5.5 TONS of litter from this very important watershed, our crew made an impact on the natural beauty of this area of Lawrenceville. Cleanup projects like these are not only incredibly crucial to the health of our waterways and surrounding environment, but they are also important for economic development because both residents and businesses like areas with less litter. We’d like to extend our gratitude to Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources and Moore Middle School for being awesome partners to us on this event, and we are so thankful for our volunteers and the amazing work they accomplished that day.”

Launched by the Gwinnett Coalition of Health and Human Services in 2000, Great Days of Service has become one of the largest community volunteer events in the nation. What began with 10 projects and 100 volunteers has grown to include over 400 projects and more than 95,000 volunteers. Designed to foster a new era of engagement and volunteerism, Great Days of Service represents a wide variety of community-focused projects to address specific needs and issues throughout Gwinnett County.
