Piedmont College is hosting a “Mass Communications Experience” on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to introduce high school students to the opportunities in the mass communications field and what Piedmont College has to offer.  

“One of the biggest advantages of Piedmont College is the face-to-face interaction that students have with their instructors. You can’t get that online,” said Dale Van Cantfort, professor of mass communications at Piedmont College. “It’s that one-on-one interaction that really sets Piedmont, and our department, apart from others.”
 
The “Mass Communications Experience” allows high school students the opportunity to learn about career paths in the media in a local and active environment. This event allows students to interact with faculty members and students on campus who are working and learning in that specific field. The Mass Communications Experience offers hands-on learning in several facets of the media, including journalism, radio, TV, new media, and public speaking and debate.

“What we try to show through our different classes is that our mass communications department is very broad,” Van Cantfort said. “We require our students to know a little bit about a lot of different aspects of mass communications. The breadth that you receive in this department is unmatched by any other school.”
 
The mass communications department at Piedmont College is housed in the Swanson Center and includes a state-of-the-art TV studio, a student-run radio station and a student newsroom. The department also hosts a student-produced yearbook, Piedmont’s award-winning student newspaper, The Roar, and a nationally-recognized speech and debate team.
